Whoa! Talk about waste.

So, Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe...whoa. Parades of all things. More specifically, parade FLOATS.

He had to clean up this nasty, chemical-laden (I'm sure), MOUNTAIN of parade float debris.

Bummer.

Then he went to a cedar shingle plant/saw mill...where there is NO waste! Every single part of the tree is used.

Kind of makes me wonder just how detrimental the wood/paper industry REALLY is, when farming is done in an eco-logically friendly way and it CAN be processed in an equally friendly way.

It also makes me want to create a homeschool opportunity to examine the plastic (specifically PET) creation and recycling system/facilities/industry.

Very interesting. I do think a lot of our "practices" could be streamlined to be far less wasteful, therefore lowering consumption, etc. if we just took the time to think it through (and put out the initial $$ it would take to convert over.) Let me know if you go anywhere with that homeschool opportunity - I'm starting down that road, myself, and would love to incorporate something along those lines into our studies...
